Re: Technical Talk
Newsflash... You know all that hoo-hah about planing shoes? Well here's a bombshell. K7 didn't have any planing shoes. They were there briefly when she was rolled out of Salmesbury's then almost immediately they were taken off and never put back. How it's taken us this long to spot that I will neve...

Re: Bluebird Archive Photos & Films
Plus of course DC had successfully practiced the "quick turnaround" system more than a couple of times ;) Steve's bang on about that. DC employed quick turnaround in all his timed runs of December 66 (10th, 12th, 13th and 14th) and the two un-timed Christmas Day and Dec 27th runs. I would...

Re: Bluebird Archive Photos & Films
260mph and all the shoes out. A small bit of nit-picking in the interests of technical accuracy - the 'shoes' are the surfaces that cover the forward, sloping face of the underside of the sponson only and they end at a small step where they meet the 'float wedges' on which the boat actually runs. I...

Re: Bluebird Archive Photos & Films
An illustration of K7's fundamental problem before the changes made in 58, K7 operating in ground effect in November 57. Those fins don't develop enough lift to hold up a 5000lb craft. 260mph and all the shoes out. (should reading wedges out) Any faster, and K7 would have been airborne at temperatur...

Re: Bluebird Archive Photos & Films
I agree that the Beryl powered version of the boat has a good overall look to the way it performs. I recall reading somewhere that it was once timed at around 285 mph when the pitot was blocked or failed and Donald couldn't determine his true speed. It kind of makes one wonder if he might have been...

Re: Dead Metal
Hi,
Its been quite quiet on here of late. Can we get an update on progress with K7. I assume all going swimmingly. Having a 12 month old little toddler means you kind of get distracted doing other stuff!
Best,
Neil

Re: Pic of the Day
5) The first run on 4 January was not without incident as has been generally claimed but demonstrated evidence of instability at the climax of that run and catastrophe was only narrowly averted. No arguing with that but there's also nothing definite to say that catastrophe could not have been narro...

Re: Pic of the Day
Here's another (foolish?) question.... Considering the current debate about the electrical system, the fuel system, the collapsing intakes, etc...How do we know that K7 was outside her "aerodynamic and hydrodynamic envelope"? I know that Norris engineering believed that to be the case, bu...
