Re: Quicksilver
Aye, you show 'em Nigel! Whilst maximum respect is due to Mr Warby for his achievements, I do think that it is somewhat unfair on other would-be record breakers to have their efforts denigrated, either because they have tried and failed, or because they have not achieved success quickly enough. Anyw...

Re: broken Barracuda Project
One thing I noticed in the photos of the Barra being craned out of the boggy pool where they found it is that it appeared to have wooden prop blades. That Merlin outside the Ruskin also has wooden prop blades. Was there a mass-producer of wooden blades in WWII? If it is a Rotol prop then the blades...

Re: Technical Talk
There is no doubt that some fuels have better lubricating properties than others; I can't be sure if Jet A-1 contains a lubricant additive, but I do remember from studying Pratt & Whitney PT-6 engines a long time ago, that they were certified to run on Avgas as well as Avtur. The downside was, i...

Re: Technical Talk
I have seen an Orpheus run on diesel fuel as well as Jet A1, so costs can be controlled Turbine engines are generally pretty tolerant of what they run on; anything from central heating oil to petrol will noemally do the trick, although the more volatile fractions such as wide cut and petrol don't h...
