Re: Technical Talk

What you can't see from the photos is that at the back of the engine is a complete set of 1/5th scale working instruments along with lube oil tanks, electrics and coolant rad's. Nor can you see by looking that the magnetos each contain coils wound from the earpieces of mobile phones using wire 0.00...

Re: Technical Talk

Now that is what I call properly stunning! A H configuration, 24 cylinder two stage supercharged engine displacing 360cc! In a just world, that sort of skill should be worth a lot of money. I used to think that I was a handy engineer, but at best would probably just make the grade as a fitter, secon...

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!

If you want to see just how 'green' the uk's power system is, then have a look here:- http://www.bmreports.com/bsp/bsp_home.htm And scroll down the page till you find the generation by fuel type table. It shows that in the last 24 hours, the contribution to total electricity demand from wind power w...

Re: John Cobb- Crusader/Railton Special

With me was a friend who happened to be a metallurgist, he informed me that the car was starting to disintergrate and the alli outer was badly hardened[aluminium and its alloys have a habit of doing that] and was starting to crack. He said that she would probably go to dust if work wasn't carried o...

Re: What did you do at the weekend?

Cheers for the plaudits Bill, I guess that now the challenge to keep current starts. I am lucky in that I did the majority of my training with mates who are proper commerical pilots, so I did a lot of instrument flying (if not in actual IMC) and going in and out of a whole variety of different airfi...

Re: What did you do at the weekend?

Completed my General Flight Test today. After a lot of aggro, and a long, long time since I first took to the air. A couple of hours aloft with an examiner today to check that all of my training worked, and hadn't gone in one ear and out the other. Navigational exercise, instrument flying, position ...

Re: What did you do at the weekend?

Fixed wing for me. For some reason, while I can see the point of Helicopters, they just don't do it for me. I would love to have a go at mastering the coordination required to fly one though. It's taken ages to get this far, I started learning to fly way back in 2001 and went solo for the first time...

Re: What did you do at the weekend?

A bit of a late post I know, but last weekend, I completed my solo qualifying cross country flight, as part of my Private Pilot's Licence training! Enstone to Cambridge, Cambridge to Leicester, and then back to Enstone. 154nm in all. On the way into Cambridge, Cambridge Tower frequency asked if I co...

Re: Antiques Roadshow/Cockpit Discussion

If you study the pics carefully you can see an opening at the base of the fin to vent the interior. How well it worked is anyone's guess though I reckon we're going to find out. Ta for that Bill, curious! The positioning of both the pitot head and the static vent would have had do be done with some...

Re: Antiques Roadshow/Cockpit Discussion

I wonder if K7's Pitot head suffered any issues with water ingress leading to instrument error on the ASI? Come to think of it, as a Pitot head measures the stagnation pressure, and would need to have the static pressure subtracted from it to give the dynamic pressure (the actual air speed). So, doe...
