Whilst traipsing about Russia my papers went wrong on many occasions yet a few dollars or a carton or two of Marlboros (my employer at the time) always seemed to grease the wheels and off I went again.

Nice story, except for the fact that no records have actually been broken, unless there is a special category for "Highest speed through the flying mile at Pendine Sands."captain sparkle wrote:Flying mile land speed record broken -

The British Land Speed record currently stands at over 300mph; if you narrow the definition down to wheel driven vehicles then Idris Elba's speed of 180mph for the flying mile still stands well short of Robert Horne's 1977 record of 191mph.
Does anybody else share the view of Bentley's publicity team that driving 6mph faster in 2015 than Malcolm Campbell did in 1927 is something to brag about?

One positive upshot is that it puts speed-records in front of the public in a way that very few actual speed-record-breakers actually do today.
Celebrity driver, dreamy roadgoing car. Instant, boil-in-the-bag speed record. It shouldn't be right. But men and machines with the magnetic pulling-power of the Campbells and their Bluebirds don't exist in 2015, alas.

Re: Other Speed Record Breakers Are Available!
The fastest British Mile automobile record is now over 200 mph thanks to Paul Drayson at Elvington Airfield, and Robert Horne/Derek Bell drove at Fairford Airfield. No one has driven as fast on UK sand powered through the wheels as Idris, although many have tried. The programme airs in July, so the story will be told then. If you feel that more than 6 mph can be added to M Campbells speed at Pendine from 1927 then enter the speed trials on May 23 to 25.mtskull wrote:except for the fact that no records have actually been broken, unless there is a special category for "Highest speed through the flying mile at Pendine Sands."

Sure, I'm just waiting for a reply from Bugatti regarding factory support and the loan of a Veyron...malcolm uk wrote:If you feel that more than 6 mph can be added to M Campbells speed at Pendine from 1927 then enter the speed trials on May 23 to 25.
Seriously though: This is being presented as a new British land speed record (and in some quarters as a new world record, although I suspect that might be to do with the usual standards of journalistic accuracy).
Malcolm, I know you to be extremely knowledgeable on such matters; can you tell us in what category this record is
being claimed?

The car established a record for the UK Timing Association, Roadgoing Car Category, Class D ('supercars'), on sand.

There will always be a place for production roadcars and motorcycles in speed-record-breaking, because there will always be someone who wants to go faster than the next guy, and production models offer the most accessible way to it.
And, arguably, there's a particular emphasis on the driver's (or rider's) skills here, because - in theory at least - anyone can get their hands on identical machinery.
But for me, the real allure will always lie in the machines that emerge from totally blank sheets of paper, just because people had the sheer bloody-minded willpower and determination to conceive, design and build them to chase a record.
Off-the-shelf speed-record packages have a place but they just don't do it for me, somehow. It's okay for a Top Gear.

Another project in the news over the weekend was Richard Brown's Jet Reaction two wheeler with a very nice full page article in the Sunday Times Driving supplement. Can't help but feel Richard is too often overlooked given his design/build skills and past history in the speed arena. Things seem to be coming together now for the Team though a title sponsor is still being sought and hopefully the ambition will be realised on the Bonneville Salt Flats later this year.

A case in point ... a machine devised and built totally from scratch (with all of the attendant headaches and heartaches, I would imagine).Pegasus wrote:Another project in the news over the weekend was Richard Brown's Jet Reaction two wheeler with a very nice full page article in the Sunday Times Driving supplement. Hopefully the last stage will come together. The bike's built and running well. The difficulty in finding a title sponsor shows how hard it is out there.
