I'm not going to do-down Facebook too harshly, as I don't feel particularly inclined to. To each their own, and all that. But this morning I received a message from Facebook that for me summed-up the ineptitude of the way it operates, which is the single reason why my account - opened long ago - is never used these days.

Facebook's greeting to me this morning was an invitation to "Connect with friends, family, classmates and coworkers to see their updates, photos and more" - and, presumably by way of encouraging me, it showed six mugshots - five of them being people I know or know of, the sixth a complete stranger.

Problem is, one of the five fellows thus depicted has been dead for about a year now. Cancer, sadly. Expected, at the time, as the person concerned had battled with it quite a bit over the past few years. Good guy, he was.

Point is this. In Facebook-land, dead people are treated as still being alive ... presumably because they didn't master the art of resurrection, Jesus-like, to close their accounts, and friends are treated as commodities to be amassed like tacky Capodimonte or scruffy Steiff bears, and - most scandalously of all - people are referred to as "Friends" even when you've never even heard of them.

Makes me bloody mad.

I am with you on that Nigel - I have been trying unsuccessfully to get LinkedIn to remove the profile of a colleague of mine who died in tragic circumstances some 19 months ago. Recently I was invited to congratulate him on a work anniversary, which highlights many of the same points you make about Facebook. The only difference is that LinkedIn is vaguely useful...

I've never had a Facebolleaux account yet not a day goes by that it doesn't tell me of a half-dozen strangers who want to be my 'friend'. Strange, though, that despite not having this essential of the digital age I still manage to see or hear from everyone I am prepared to call a friend on a regular basis. Am I doing something wrong?

A friend sent me this yesterday so see what you all think!

Beyond facebook.

Presently, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook whilst still applying the same principles.

Therefore every day, I go down the street and tell the passers by what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night before, and what I will do after. I give them pictures of my partner, our children, the dog and me gardening and spending time in my pool.

I also listen to their conversations and I tell them I love them.

And it works!

I already have three persons following me – two police officers and a psychiatrist. :D

I happened on the following, painfully true, new word and definition recently:

An Ineptocracy

A system of Government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

No, if that is what works for you. Personally, although I find a great deal of what is posted on Facebook incredibly crass, I have found it very useful for keeping in touch with people who I can't meet face to face with on a regular basis and also for facilitating proper social contact.
Someone on this forum used to tag their posts with the line: "Facebook is to socialising what masturbation is to sex".
To which could be added: "....no substitute for the real thing but has its uses when the real thing is unavailable"!
Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.
