Hi All
For any Forum members attending Coniston this weekend you should be aware we are holding the Annual Speed Record Club gathering and the following should be noted.
On Friday 8th we will all be meeting up at the Yewdale Hotel and not the Black Bull as stated which is closed until the 18th January for internal refurbishments. Saturday 9th's events will see the return of the rocket boats at the private jetty at the Waterhead Hotel. The Mid day and afternoon will see a guided walk around the village but also weather permitting John Wood will be taking those walkers amongst us for a walk up the Old Man which at this times looks doubtful. He will only be taking those appropriately dresses and kitted out. Saturday night will see an evening buffet and band at the Waterhead Hotel once again till late on. And on the 10th on Sunday morning will be the usual paying of respect to Donald Campbell and Leo Villa at the Memorial firstly all welcome 10.am ish then on to the grave yard before finally taking coffee back at the Waterhead Hotel. There may be a few extras thrown in along the way but I cannot be sure at this time due to weather. Talking of which the weather is cold but OK at the moment. No more snow has fallen since last night. The main roads are clear to get to the village although caution should be taken as black ice has claimed the unwary out there! Anyone needing further information should have a chat with Mrs. Jane Pittwood events organizer to obtain further information on attending the Evening buffet etc. You don't have to be a member to attend but entrance to events may cost a little more? If anybody wants further details of how to contact Jane i will look out the contact number for her should the need arise.
Regards

I was up on the top of Coniston Old Man yesterday and it was certainly an intresting walk! I decided to go up the 'tourist Way' which was fairly banked up with snow. The snow isn't yet consolidated so you spend most of the way sinking into the snow at various depths at one time I was in up to my waist! The last few hundred metres where it's really steep are intresting, it's much more consilidated than the rest and whilst you can get up there without crampons on (kicking steps is easy enough in this snow) but in all honesty crampons make much lighter work of it.Terminator wrote:weather permitting John Wood will be taking those walkers amongst us for a walk up the Old Man which at this times looks doubtful. The Helvellyn fell top assessor recorded temperatures of minus 6 and a wind chill of minus 16, it certainly felt like that on the old man and the strong winds were really kicking up the spin drift making ski goggles a necessity.
As I looked down onto Coniston though I couldn't help but think how great it will be to see and hear the big blue boat skiming down the lake from there.

Hi John
Well done you old Lunatic for checking out the Old Man Walk!! Well The weather in Coniston today for all those traveling up today is very cold! Minus whatever it is this morning it actually felt warmer at 6am this morning doing the paper rounds on the Mountain Bank up on the Banks,Far end etc. People look on in amazment when they are struggling to walk let alone me flying past on the Mnt bike The roads have been gritted to my complete surprise last night as whilst out and about this past few days delivering I can count the number of gritters I have past on one hand!! The main roads are still OK but still take care and stick to the main routes. No further snow has fallen but as the daylight arrives it is colder than earlier on? Strange why that should be but there you go.
Take care people see you all this evening in the Yewdale Hotel .

Sorry for the confusion but I'm not John Just another crazy local! I just thought I'd let people know what the conditions were like up there.
Anyway hope you all have a good weekend and I'm off to play in some more mountains this weekend.
Chris.
