I thought that but decided it was a little obscure - but you're bang on.

The resemblance ends there, for sure! Mr Bowsher is a man who has forgotten more than I will ever know.....

There are designers who write books about themselves - basically telling the world how wonderful they are. And there are designers like Glynne who quietly work their magic, largely unknown and unsung ... and happy forever to remain so, for they know their own worth and modesty comes as second nature to them.

I have had the privilege of working with both types, and I very much prefer the joy of working with the latter.

A smashing chap is Glynn...

Only met him once or twice but on one of these occasions I was once bitching to him about the material used in K7's frame, that evil T-60 steel, and how it's more like a stainless in that it won't cut or drill and if it does it shrieks blue murder and about how it distorts terribly when you weld it, etc.

"Ahhh," said Glynn, "When we designed SSC we used T-45."

Knowing that I'm not qualified to carry his slide-rule and believing that I was about to be treated to some ultra-clever engineering theory that I'd likely not fully understand, I asked him why he's specified what, on the face of it, is a lesser material.

"Because you can cut it, drill it, weld it..."

Now that's what I call common sense.

Just to clear up any misunderstanding about the use of T45 being a means of avoiding distortion.

The spaceframe of ThrustSSC had some distortion. I'm not going to say how much, but it wasn't insignificant. It didn't seem to harm them unduly, as they did so brilliantly well with the car.

It is well-nigh impossible to avoid some distortion in a fabrication job of that kind, even with T45. It was one of the things we looked into before we gave the green light to the spaceframe build for Quicksilver. How much we might suffer from distortion.

We used T59. Some distortion - the same thing. But, again, not particularly problematic.
