Great pic of the day today, that top view of the engine is fantastic. Generally you can't see much between the engine and hull sides in the old photos, as it's all in darkness/shadow, so it's especially interesting to me from a detail point of view.

Evening all, apologies if this has already been discussed on the diary but I haven't been able to pinpoint it. I wondered what the component (silver coloured plate with two black circular attachments) in this picture is?

We finally declared the hyd system operational tonight. It functions perfectly, though we now have to pull it down again for a good round of fetling. The accumulator seals have leaked a small amount of oil to the gas side so they need sorting and there's a leak here and there that we'd no doubt live with on a working machine but the fluid is damn good at lifting the paint so best it doesn't weep from anywhere on those long lonely nights in the museum between trips out.
Ironically, we finally sorted the gasket blowing problem with the water brake ram itself by the simple expedient of putting back the half-century-old asbestos gaskets that we raked out of the lake!
In the fullness of time we might make a few mod's in the interest of long-term reliability (not a concern in 1966) and so no oil can ever get out again just in case some do-good, save the planet type accuses us of sinking a swan or something.

In between re-shaping the Touchwood K7's hull sides and nose, and making a new jig for re-shaping the ramped recesses either side of the cockpit (since I realised some time back I've not got them right yet) , I've started thinking ahead to other things, including detailing for the cockpit. Reading back through the diary page about that lovely Dymo-tape gadget, I wondered if you guys have a full list of the cockpit labels? The ones on the bloc-tube box are nice and clear, and in the well known picture in ''With Campbell at Coniston'' I can make out the black ones 'Bilge Pump/Igniters/LP Boost'. I can't make out the red ones though, apart from the word 'Warning' and then possibly 'Brake'(?) and I can see in the Leo Villa book that there are blue labels on the right hand side, though this photo is blurred. Would greatly appreciate any help with this.
Granted these are only going to be about a millimetre tall in the Touchwood, but I've been able to sample ''Impact'' font to create these on a word document, so they'll look authentic. I've emailed a few transfer places today to see if they can make these, along with tiny Bristol Aerojet labels and the fire panel labels. Next up will be the top 'deck' in front of the cockpit, which on the Touchwood is flat at the moment and needs work.

Fantastic, thanks Mike. I'm aware of 'crafty computer paper' for making your own transfers, but with my printer I can't make any of the graphics small enough. The cockpit labels will be tiny yes, but I got one of those magnifying headbands with built-in LEDs for Christmas you see...

Actually speaking of boggling the mind, I've found a kit for making a 1/12 harness with photo-etched parts. How on earth they can make such tiny things so precisely boggles my mind. Helpfully there's a 1/12 decal sheet of cockpit instruments, too.

It boggles me that Mike worked all that out! And I know you can make tiny labels using some sort of clever photographic process because Barry made image-perfect little R-R maker's plates for his engine parts. We don't call him 'Clever Barry' for nothing.The red label across the centre of the dash says 'WARNING BRAKE POSITION'.
There are six blue labels...
CONTROLS FREE
BRAKE UP
FIRE PANEL ON
H.P. ON
L.P. FUEL ON
IGNITERS
Above those are two warning lights...
L.P. BOOST
OIL PRESSURE
...and above and below the water brake switch are...
HYD BRAKE UP
HYD BRAKE DOWN
Over on the left you have AIR START and you've already mentioned the rest.

Cheers Bill, that looks amazing. I'm enjoying working out how to make the various sections of 1/12 Orph, and the plate in this picture has exactly the right metallic look.
