Re: Malcolm Campbell's 350 hp Sunbeam
The blue was matched off some of the remaining paint on the long stream lined tail (and one of the original rear wheel discs), and was probably, and as usual, what was offered free/cheap at the time, MC being one always careful with his money. So the colour should be accurate, for that car..............
Only joking Ian (as I am sure you knew!!) I did a lot of research into that engine, and the vast majority was one off stuff. It was due to go into production, but the production run ended at, one! The gearbox isn't much better, so the rebuild to running condition is all the more impressive.
"Now, about those two Matable engines on Beaulieu's workshop shelves..." are these the "Slug/Mystery Racer" spares!!?? A batch of fur were made, all specific to the car (power take off being the issue I recall), but the 1000HP and Golden Arrow are so original, seems a shame to muck about with them. That age old problem, to keep original, to have running?

The gearbox currently in the Sunbeam is from a tractor or some such. It's not the original. The gearbox isn't much better, so the rebuild to running condition is all the more impressive.

Does the original actually still exist?Renegadenemo wrote:The gearbox currently in the Sunbeam is from a tractor or some such. It's not the original. The gearbox isn't much better, so the rebuild to running condition is all the more impressive.

Best ask the NMM about that. I am not sure when the alleged Albion gearbox was fitted or whether it came with the car from Ralph Aspden. It may have been fitted in its sand racing days but I have a vague memory of the current gearbox having been fitted by Beaulieu Garage (who then did the maintenance on the museum's cars) prior to the Bluebird CN7 launch at Goodwood in 1960. Basically so the car could be mobile. So, no, not sure really.peugeot143 wrote:Does the original actually still exist?

That's quite a sight - a moving piece of LSR history, nearly 100 years old.
The engine sounds a little uneven and off-tune, unless it's just the result of understandable reluctance to give it too much throttle at present and around the small areas where it was pictured in this video. Interesting to see the guy circling it with fire-extinguisher in hand at one stage. It reminded me a little of the automatic extinguisher in the workshop in the Iron Man movie when he was testing his suit
It would be nice to see and hear the Sunbeam given more of its head, subject to sensible and agreed throttle openings being used of course. It would be shocking to break something again after all the painstaking restoration of its unique engine.

Can't see it breaking anytime soon. I got a look at the new rods they had made for it and they were the last word in quality. They've done a beautiful job on it.
