It seems we have lost a very dear friend. Carl tragically lost his life in a diving accident yesterday. Will tell you more when I know it. Condolences to Vicky and the kids.

Just when you think a rotten week can’t get any worse, news like this.
I only met Carl once (at the first rivet in the boat day) but he was the nicest, most genuine bloke anybody would want to meet. This is truly a tragedy.
The BBP will miss him but my personal heartfelt condolences go to his family.

I met Carl in 2000 and spent many hours afloat and one 56 hour drive in a transit van to the top of norway with him
I was devastated when I got a phone call telling me about his accident
He was a true gentleman a dear friend and a all round good guy

My only meeting with Carl was at the rivet setting event. Not long enough to claim anything more than just knowing the guy as a passing acquaintance involved with the BBP.

Amongst the sadness of this event remember this small crumb of comfort, (that has sustained me during recent tragedies in the world of speed record breaking), Carl was taking part in an activity that he enjoyed and had already shown through his achievements, his skill and talent.

There's no doubt Carl died doing something he loved but he was supposed to die an old man in his bed. Not like this. We'd talked about him hanging up his fins and he reckoned he was only a couple of years away.

I have to say that i dont go with that old chestnut."He died doing what he enjoyed doing" either. I have seen in my time more than my share of good men, and women for that matter die too young. If they were doing a hobby or terminal disease doesnt make it right. Just tragic, and i am sure all of these people would have enjoyed seeing thier unborn child or thier young family grow up and all of the tears and happiness that goes with that process.

I've been on both sides of the coin and when I was away diving, including mixed-gas, closed-circuit rebreather diving on the Britannic wreck, I always drummed it into those back home that if I didn't come back they had to remember that I jumped off the dive boat full of excitement for the dive ahead and I'd have been miserable if I wasn't away diving with my mates. They'd have taken comfort in that had I failed to surface. As it happens I married in 2003 with the intention of raising a family and made a conscious decision to retire from CCR diving at that time. I was fortunate in being able to make that decision with something waiting in the wings in which to devote my energies. When our big tin boat gets wet again I'll be thinking of Carl, the Norris boys and all those who didn't live to see it through - assuming I do. Carl's last mail to me ended...
