The Beryl oil filter was mounted above it on the upper bulkhead and the fuel filter was on the other side and, while the anal-widgetry dept. has been trying to second guess the purpose of what appears to be a redundant prop for a game of snakes & ladders all day, the real boat builders finished off the lower skin for Righty and delivered it, flapping like a mad thing on the roof of the van, to Bettablast for painting.

...the top-hat section for under the intake didn't have a hole in it for a start, Mr Bullfrog!

Batteries "look" in great shape, just hope the internals survived all them years under water and will throw out a few amps once again!

What was the condition of the wiring throughout the boat? Can it be restored or will it be a complete/part rewire?

I can answer that one - the wiring loom was largely retrieved but after 34 years under water and with parts of it dating back to 1955, we decided on a replacement, but re-using as much of the original system hardware (panels, sockets etc) as possible and using the correct period cabling. There should be a relevant piece in the Diary soon if you would like more detail.

An old friend of mine has always been a bit of a god at resurrecting batteries - he once grabbed a supposedly knackered second-hand battery out of the workshop for his bike and not only got it going again but still had it on there 7 years later. I'll give him a shout to check on exactly what he did but from memory he basically rinsed it out a few times with boiling water before refilling it with new acid and did that every year as part of the winter service. Apparently the heat from the boiling water cracks any sulphate off the plates and, as long as it isn't bad enough to have buckled them, leaves them all as good as new.

We don't know how good the batteries were when they were installed but after they sank it's safe to say that they got a good rinsing with fresh water. Novie emptied them and described a fair quantity of black debris coming out of them. Beyond that we know nothing about them but we'll certainly have a go at getting them going again.
