Yup wasn't 50's technology wonderful?-once had a part share in an Antonov AN2-weird Iron Curtain biplane-the engine start procedure took nearly 30 minutes to complete!-thank God it was a single engined jobbie!-although in typical commie fashion they didn't stop making them till the mid 1980's-great to fly though-could maintain flight at 26mph!-and take off from a carpark.always wanted to try land the thing on Ailsa Craig for the hell of it! :D

Daresay we could fit it with a small turbo. Lots of 'em about in this day and age. That was a speciality of mine many moons ago. I turbocharged my Astra GTE for a laugh then accepted a challenge to a race on Her Majesty's highway from a bloke who would become (and remains) a very good friend. Let's see if he takes up the tale...

Mike - the running blade vehicle was being held back by the resistance of the beach surface on the Sunday. The course was clean (and as ever not straight except through the mile timing) but the 'porridge' section indicated that the softness was further from the dunes. Beyond the 20 metres of width available to Don the tide had left a surface that looked like a battlefield - pock marked with holes and depressions. Fastest one way average for Don was 88.888 mph.

Whilst Bob Cleveland had a tidier surface on the salt it was at 4,000+ feet elevation so he lost horsepower. His speed target of 104 mph became a creditable 80 mph.

Bill - there are rules on the Guinness site but the aim has been to promote a 'standard' construction ride on lawn mower rather than a hot rodded version as you suggest with a turbo. There again an outlaw mower - provided it can cut grass - could be a challenger to the bragging rights for high speed.

Bob will run again with two machines available to him and he invited the Brits to a duel in the sun at Bonneville. And yes I did ask about the availability of grass - the answer will be in the next Fast FACTS.

I don't know about taking up the tale, but I remember being on your tail at 140, thinking why is this blokes car faster than mine, only one way to find out follow him until he stops and ask for a go of his car, to which I did. I sometimes wonder nowadays if a stranger pulled up alongside and said can I have a go of your car how many people would just hand the keys over ?

Funny how even now, there's still that competitive streak in us, like seeing how far we can launch a water balloon from some childs toy, to launching bin bags into the atmosphere - Will we ever grow up ?

Hope not... and my water balloon definitely went further than yours. Less said about diving helium and bin bags the better though seeing as I live on the approach to Newcastle airport...

Sir Malcolm, what engine mod's are you allowed?

Provided the base power unit is one for a ride on lawnmower, for speed record breaking under the Guinness rules there are no stated tuning limits.

Provided you can cut grass on the same day there doesn't seem much that is prevented.

Should anyone go down the 'outlaw' or independant route then be prepared to possibly be challenged by the makers crying 'foul'. Some of the vehicles used on the drag strips are quad style with racing motorcycle engines which are fast but could never cut grass!

Don's been up to a lot lately, hasn't he? First there was the steam powered car landspeed record, and now the lawn mower landspeed record at Pendine. What's next? :)
